Walking Through Autism: My Greatest Life Teacher

Updated: Apr 14, 2024

I captured this photo of my precious daughter Linda, when she was 3 years old, just before being diagnosed with severe autism in 2010.

🖤

Being my 4th child I was happy to see Linda hit all the early developmental milestones like the other children. Then suddenly at about 2 years old her behaviors began to change. This is when the new reality began to surface along with it's many questions, concerns, hope and even denial all at the same time. I see "Tracy then" at the onset of the new reality and feel a deep desire to reach out to her with love from the Tracy I am today. "Tracy then", represents to me anyone currently facing heartbreaking news about a loved one.

Walking through autism has been and continues to be my greatest life teacher. The journey takes many turns for those who find themselves on this unexpected path. As I revisit the last 15 years from my daughter’s diagnosis of autism and intellectual disability, my intention here is to extend words of encouragement from my present self that can help others navigate the unexpected storm of emotions that can cause the heart to nearly fail.

My hope is for all to embrace new realities with courage and positivity so that one’s higher self can live in ultimate power while facing adversity. Words of encouragement written in retrospect by one who continues to walk thorough autism with a loved one may serve as a comfort to some. Having a child with severe autism and intellectual disability isn’t hoped for or planned on, but can be understood and accepted as a meaningful and profound blessing. If sharing my thoughts can help one person find peace amidst the challenging new reality, I have achieved my goal.
